Saint Nicholas was born on 15th of March 270 in the city of Patara. His common name was Nicholas and he was considered a bishop. He lived in Myra and died on the 6th of December 346 in Myra, and everybody called him a saint. During his lifetime he worked in Myra, in modern-day Turkey. People attributed him many miracles and called him also Nicholas the Wonderworker. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, for example he put coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him. Thus he became the model for Santa Claus, whose English name comes from the German Sankt Niklaus. The metamorphosis of Saint Nicholas into the more commercially lucrative Santa Claus took several centuries in Europe and America. The legend says that there was a poor man who had three daughters. Unfortunately he could not afford a proper dowry for them. Hearing of this, Nicholas decided to help him but being too modest to help the man in public, he went to his house under the cover of night and threw three purses (one for each daughter) filled with gold coins.
