He lived in Myra and died on the 6th of December 346 in Myra, and everybody called him a saint. During his lifetime he worked in Myra, in modern-day Turkey. People attributed him many miracles and called him also Nicholas the Wonderworker. He had a reputation for secret gift-giving, for example he put coins in the shoes of those who left them out for him. Thus he became the model for Santa Claus, whose English name comes from the German Sankt Niklaus.
