It was a long time ago, I remember that much. Maybe ten years or so. What can I say? I’m not a big fan of hospitals or doctors or being sick in general so I usually avoid them whenever possible. However, every now and then, tragedy strikes and my body becomes under siege. This time, a rather persistent and pesky inner ear infection decided to call my head home, throwing off my balance and depth perception.
It was so bad I actually missed a day from work which, back then, was very uncommon. Needing a doctor’s note to excuse my absense, that’s how I found myself sitting in the waiting room of a local clinic, reading gossip magazines (or trying to anyways) and keeping myself from flopping over like a fish.
After a short jaunt of eternity, I was finally called into the little office with the paper covered bed and small desk covered in various instruments my mind began imagining as cruel torture devices. Alone in the room, I was already working down my list of things to confess when the procedure started.
At last, the doctor joined me. He had the appearance of a typical doctor, if you think a typical doctor is tall, thin with greying short hair and glasses over a hook nose. He was pleasant enough with the procedure, quickly identifying my ailment.
As a matter of protocol, the kind doctor took my blood pressure. That’s when he made a startling discovery about me: for my age, I had an extremely low blood pressure. The doc concluded that I either led a pretty stress free life or was in a coma. Since I was awake and aware in front of him, clearly it was the former.
Personally, I think I should have gotten a second opinion.
So he gave me his diagnosis and told me to take some ibuprofen and see how I felt in the morning. Very typical.
