Stephen the great was a voivod in Moldova. He is named Prince Stephan III of Moldova.
He was attacked bu Ottoman Sultan Mehmed but managed to defeat the enemies. He was defeated in turn at Valea Alba , barely escaping with his life . He has concluded a treaty with Turkish Sultan Bayezid II but had to pay an annual tribute to the turks.
Stephan the great has earned his title by winning renown in Europe for his long resistance with the turks. He was born in 1435 but died in 1504. He successfuly stopped an invasion in Hungary but had then succumbed to turkish vassalage. He was claimed as the " athlete of Christ" by Pope Sixtus IV .Stephen’s long reign nonetheless brought considerable cultural development and was a period of great ecclestical building and endowment.
Stephen secured the throne of Moldavia in 1457.
