Winter lasts so long because now we are feeling the effects of climate change. Because of the green house gases our climate has begun a process of change, which means that our winter starts later in the year in January, compared with the last 50 years when it used to start in December. Further more it lasts way longer, until the beginning of April. This of course depends on the area that you live in. If you live in the mountains winter might come earlier and last much longer due to the altitude and the fact that the clouds are much closer to the ground, which usually means that the temperature will be lower that in the plains.
