Experts believe that the Inca built Machu Picchu for their emperor Pachacuti in 1450 . They didn't have the wheel , so they carried everything they needed up the mountain ! Lots of people lived in Machu Picchu ; it looked more like a small town than an emperor's home ! Sadly , the Inca left Machu Picchu after only 80 years , because the Spanish arrived in Peru . The Inca didn't want the Spanish to find their beautiful city , so they hid the road to Machu Picchu . The Spanish never found it , and only the Inca knew about the place until Hiram Bingham discovered it in 1911. Later , he shared his discovery with the rest of the world , and in 1983 , Machu Picchu became a UNESCO World Heritage Site . In 2007 , it won a place on the New Seven Wonders of the World list .
