In the greek mythology, the minotaur is a fabulous creature half human half bull.
He lived in the great Labyrinth built by architect Dedal at the command of the Cretan Minos king. The word "Minotaur" is the Greek translation of the phrase "Taurus of Minos". This creature was also known as Asterius or Asterion, a name that Minos was also the stepfather's father.
It is said that before becoming king, Minos asked the Greek god Poseidon a sign to ensure that he and his brother were not the descendant of the Cretan Throne (other sources say they would have praised the gods wanting to make it king). Poseidon agreed and sent a very beautiful white bull, provided that Minos sacrificed that animal to the god. Minos was so stunned by the beauty of the bull that he decided to keep it and sacrificed in his place another, hoping the god would not notice. Poseidon was angry and made Minos's wife, Pasiphae, to lose his mind and fall in love with the bull. Pasiphae asked for help from Dedal, who built a cowhide wood covered with leather and empty inside. The Queen entered this construction and her union with the white bull resulted in Asterius (the shining one) or the Minotaur. After some variations, the white bull became the Cretan Taurus, captured by Hercules in one of his works.
