Years of apprenticeship and beginnings of artistic career
Painting is part of Picasso's life and, at the same time, his life is equally art. He was born on 25 October 1881 in Malaga (Andalusia) as the son of José Ruiz Blasco, a painter and professor at the Fine Arts School in Malaga, and his wife Maria Picasso y López. Pablito's talent has been highlighted since childhood, as a teenager astonishes Professors at the La Coruna Institute of Fine Arts, though he hardly bears the rigor of tradition and academic education. In 1895 the family moved to Barcelona. His father gives him his brushes, a gesture that recognizes his talent. Young Picasso continues his studies at the Barcelona School of Fine Arts (1896) and the Madrid Academy of Painting (1897-1898). In 1900, nineteen-year-old Pablo exhibited for the first time in Els Quatre Gats (Barcelona's Four Cats), where the artistic and intellectual avant-garde of Catalonia's capital gathers. From 1901, he begins to sign his works with his mother's name, believes Picasso "sounds great." The next years he spends traveling between Spain and France. In Paris he is influenced by the works of Auguste Renoir and Claude Monet. He displays some paintings at the galley artist Ambroise Vollard, where he meets the painter Max Jacob, who will connect him with a long-lasting friendship.

In 1904, Picasso decides to settle in Paris, in an old house known as Bateau Lavoir, where students, painters, sculptors and actors live. He is painting early paintings in cool blue tones (the so-called blue period), expressing loneliness, suffering and poverty, reflecting a melancholic affection. She knows Fernande Olivier, a young brunette and elegant, whom she falls in love with and lives with.
