Riverine Rabbit (Bunolagus monticularis) is also called the bush rabbit. It is an endangered critical mammal with an estimated population of 250 left. It exists only in the Karoo Desert of South Africa. It inhabits river basins and vegetation along the river. It feeds on grass, flowers and leaves. The rabbit has a very low reproduction rate, through which the females give birth to one chick per year. The breeding season begins in August and ends in May. The reason for the decline in population is the destruction of its habitat, overhunting and the destruction of cats and wild dogs. Conservation efforts include educating the local community about the importance of Rabbi Riverine, as well as captive breeding in one of South Africa's reserves.
