When Grace and her beloved horse, Pilgrim, are seriously injured in a riding accident and are unable to recover, Annie McClean, Grace's mother, asks the help of Tom Booker.
Even if the man who cures troubled horses says that Pilgrim is too badly damaged for him to help, Annie takes the horse and her daughter to Montana and asks Tom to change his mind.
He reluctantly agrees to look at the horse again. But the horse looks worse than he remembers and Tom is surprised that Pilgrim can stand and kick like a wild animal, when his front leg is so thin.
When Tom drives to Annie's house, he meets Grace, who tells him she doesn't want to know anything about the matter. Tom doesn't know how he is going to tell Annie and Grace the bad news but, suddenly, he understands that, perhaps, if he could help the horse, he could help Annie and Grace, too.
Before going back to the stables, Tom tells Grace that he will only try to help Pilgrim if she will assist him.
After a long pause, Grace says she will go with him.
