Statue of Liberty:
The statue was a gift from the french people to the american people because of
the american declaration of independence. The idea of a statue had the proffesor edourd de laboulaye. The statue was a joint effort between america and france and it was agreed upon that the american people were to build the pedestal and the french people were ressponsible for the statue and its assembly in the united states.
However, lack of founds was a problem on both sides of the atlantic ocean.
Construction of the statue began in france in the year 1875, by sculptor Auguste Bartholdi. The Statue of Liberty was build with the help of tons of workers working ten hour days, seven days a week for nine years!
The final completion of the sections was in june of 1884. Engineering of the structure's assembly was done by Gustave Eiffel. The french ship ' Isere' trasported the statue from france to the united states. In transit the statue was reduced to 350 pieces and packed in 214 crates. On october 28th in 1886 the statue of liberty was official unvelled on Bedloe's Island. President Grover Cleaveland excepted the statue on behalf of the united states ans said in part: 'we will not forget that liberty here made her home'. Over the next 100 years it became perhaps that next most well-known landmark. The Statue of Liberty is located in New York. She symbolizes freedom throughout the world.
This Statue represents a woman escaping the chains of tyranny. She holds a torch, which represents liberty. The Statue's full name is Liberty Enlightening the World. The Statue of liberty has stood as a welcoming symbol to millions of immigrants to the united states and for a new life and a new country for more than hundred years.
And some facts about the statue of liberty to the end:
The arm holding the torch measures 46 feet (14 meters); the index finger, 8 feet (2.4 meters); the nose, nearly 5 feet (1.5 meters).
Standing 151 feet above New York Harbor since 1886, the ferry brings you to her feet on Liberty Island. If you want to climb the 354 step narrow winding staircase inside the Statue, get there early, long lines can mean a 3-hour ascent.
Statue of Admiral Horatio Nelson:
On 22nd March 1813, a magnificent bronze statue of Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson was erected in the capital city Bridgetown, in the area known as Trafalgar Square, opposite Parliament Buildings.
The statue predates Nelson Column in Trafalgar Square in London by nearly 30 years. Barbados' Trafalgar Square was officially renamed National Heroes Square in April 1999.
On November 16th 2020, the statue was removed from Bridgetown and moved to the Barbados Museum and Historical Society. During the removal ceremony Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley stated: "While we accept that the statute of Vice-Admiral Lord Horatio Nelson is an important historical relic, it is not a relic to be placed in the National Heroes Square of a nation that has to fight for too long to shape its destiny".
Heroes Square remains a wonderful stop when you visit Bridgetown, with views of the historic Parliament Buildings and picturesque Careenage as a back-drop. The Square is home to the Dolphin Fountain and the Cenotaph.
Nelson visited Barbados in 1805 and was considered a hero by locals of the day for his battles against the French who controlled some of the other islands in the Caribbean. Indeed the French and British forces were often battling for ownership of the islands with several islands changing hands frequently. Barbados on the other hand remained under British rule until independence in 1966.
The removal of the statue from its prominent position reflects a move away from vestiges of colonial rule, and acknowledgement that Nelson was a strong defender of the British Colonial system which included slavery.
The Goddes of democracy:
The Goddess of Democracy, also known as the Goddess of Democracy and Freedom, the Spirit of Democracy, and the Goddess was a 10-metre-tall (33 ft) statue created during the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. The statue was constructed over four days out of foam and papier-mâché over a metal armature. The constructors decided to make the statue as large as possible to try to dissuade the government from dismantling it: the government would either have to destroy the statue—an action which would potentially fuel further criticism of its policies—or leave it standing. Nevertheless, the statue was destroyed on June 4, 1989, by soldiers clearing the protesters from Tiananmen square. Since its destruction, numerous replicas and memorials have been erected around the world, including in Hong Kong, San Francisco, Washington, D.C., and Vancouver.
