ROMANIAN FEATURES AND TRADITIONS
The Romanian customs are richly represented in literary folklore, being related to the work unfolding in its natural environment.
The traditional customs that occupy a special place, by their duration and scale, are those related to the winter holidays, also called the celebrations of the change of the year. They cover, full of years, two full weeks (December 24 - January 7) and have Christmas and New Year as central points. Now their rich and colorful repertoire is known, which includes: the carol (the children), the plow, the star and the sorcova. Through these creations, religious celebrations are, for all Christianity, occasions for manifestation of joy, gratitude, faith in the Divinity, moments of spiritual purification and closeness between people of all ages. Children are enlivening these holidays, because they are the "actors" and the "principal" beneficiaries, even if they are accompanied by the mature ones who are prone to relive the unforgettable age of caroling and plowing. The little ones live in full and sincerely the religious feeling expressed in these creations, being influenced by Christian faith and conduct.carols
The Romanian word "carols" derives from the Latin "calendae", the origin of these manifestations and ritual songs being Romanian. This is about the "January Calendars", which equaled the New Year's Eve. For children, caroling must be an opportunity to strengthen the faith, to purify the soul, to become aware of the fact that a good Christian must be honest, good with his neighbor, to respect his parents and grandparents, not to be avenge. It is true, while walking on a carriage (to relatives, friends), the children are the messengers of the sense of purification, of soul enchantment and less of the ideas of Christian dogma, which I do not understand yet. In this respect, educators must select short carols with fluent verses and, if possible, archaic forms that make it difficult to pronounce and require explanations at leisure.
plow
While caroling is made particularly heard on the Christmas feast, the plow dominates the New Year's feast. This folk creation is framed by folklorists in the descriptive poetry expressing an ancient ritual inherited from the Romans. In the Romans, the plow is spread in Moldavia, Muntenia and Oltenia, except in the other provinces, but here it is reintroduced via livestock.
The agrarian character of the habit is also seen in the means that accompany the verses: plow, buhai, ling, whipping. The magic act is symbolized by the "first furrow", and the poetic of the agricultural work. Being an agrarian rendered imagery through a New Year's wish, it is symbolized by a plug pulled by two or more oxen.
The traditional plowman contains elements of the ethnogenesis of the Romanian people, which, through Traian and Dochiana, constitute the basic pillars of one of the fundamental myths of the Romanian people.
