In those days, there were many then

England. There were no free you

Perhaps the little chimney- find

then so
The chimneys were
narrow inside that only little boys, ma
or even girls, could get them kne

When the sweep went to a fac
house early in the morning, he late
would have a little boy with him. pla
The poor little fellow had to take
off all his clothes, then he was sent we
up inside the narrow chimney. If th
he cried and would not go, he was su
whipped. Up he had to climb, up
brushing the chimney as he went.tr
The soot poured over him, and to
filled his eyes and his ears. Still he s
had to climb. When at last he came
to the top, he cried 'sweep' to let
his master know that the work
was done. All day long the little boy would work. At night, dirty as anima
he was, he would lie down to way
sleep on a bag of soot. It is said
that some little chimney-sweeps

did not have a bath for a whole he sa

The Earl of Shaftesbury was not
for t
very sorry for these little boys. He were
often spoke in Parliament about had
them; and he was not content with
until a law was passed so that no too
young children were sent up his
chimneys again. Their masters had wou
to do without them, and had to to
find a better way to sweep the peo

This law changed the lives of Earl
many children, but the good Earl T
knew that there were other little all
children who had to work hard in hel
factories, from early morning until Eve
late at night. They had no time to w
play; they never went to school. hu
Other children had to live and afr
work in the mines. They never saw sp
the bright blue sky except once
Sundays, when they were brought m
up from the dark. The good Earl th
tried hard to change their lives, ac
too. Finally, with his friends, he c
succeeded in putting this right asb
well. Parliament passed a law that
no little boys or girls were to work
in a factory or down a mine.
The Earl was also very fond of animals. He did not like to see the
way some
donkeys pulling carts and barrows
people ill-treated
through the streets of London. So
he said that he would give prizes
for the best-kept donkeys. It was
not long before London donkeys
were the best in the land. The Earl
had a beautiful barrow himself,
with his name on it. If a man was
too poor to buy a barrow to carry
his goods to the market, the Earl
would lend him his. He was sure
to have a good sale as many
people were very anxious to buy
apples and potatoes from the
Earl's barrow
The Earl was, indeed, a friend to
all who were in trouble. Once he
held a very strange meeting.
Everyone there, except himself,
was a thief! There were four
hundred of them. He was not
afraid to be among them. He
spoke to them, and told them he
could help them to be honest
men. Some were very glad to have
the chance, and the Earl sent them
across the seas. There, in a new
country, they were able to start a
better and useful life.
No wonder there was great
sorrow when the Earl of
Shaftesbury died. He had spent his
life doing good.(Multumesc,anticipat)

In Victorian England lived the 7th Earl od Shaftesbury, who was a very good man.
He dedicated his life to helping the children, the poor, and everyone who needed help.
In those times, some of the children were living very difficult lives, working hard as chimney-sweeps, or in factories, or even in mines, - and never going to school. The Earl spoke to the Parliament on the behalf of these children and helped design laws to improve their condition. These laws were making it illegal from then on, for young children to be employed in either of these activities.
He also helped animals, like for example the donkeys that were pulling carts in London, which were ill treated by some of the owners. He announced a prize for the best kept donkey and all the owners started to take better care of their animals. To the poor merchants who didn't have enough money for buyng a barrow - he would lend his beautiful barrow.
Lord Shaftesbury even helped thieves, the ones amongst them who manifested their desire to become better people. The Earl offered them a second chance: He paid for them to go overseas, where they could start a new live.
He was mourned by one and all when he died, and that was only to be expected since he had been such good and generous human being during his life.
Tradus
