The animals who live in a zoo aren't generally released back into the wilderness. This is because not using their insticts for so long (or at all) means that thwy wouldn't be able to live normal life like find food, know the territory, hunt or fear predators like they need to.
However there are animals that now only exist in zoos. These animals have been hunted a lot for their special traits - like furs, trophy heads, tusks - and now their species are still alive thanks to the individuals kept in the zoos. The african rhino is a good example. There are also species that don't have as much habitat as they used to or that generally are not too good at surviving, so zoos are trying to help the species keep going and to grow in numbers - such as the panda bear. Zoos can also take in animals that aren't able to live in the wild anymore and give them a new life.
Zoos keep animals that we may never get to see in the wild - whether it's because they are disappearing or because we could never get to them.
