In my humble opinion, I mostly agree with Jason Romford as it’s physically impossible to please everyone, there are bound to be people who get easily offended whatever the situation may be. However this doesn’t mean that one should offend somebody just for the fun of it, that just shows immaturity, but then again isn’t comedy just that?
To kick things off, comedy should always be perceived as escapism to the bleak scenery that life sometimes seems to show off. I strongly believe that jokes at the end of the day are just jokes which should always be taken lightly. Unless they are thrown at you constantly then I don’t see any harm in an innocent pun as only by knowing your flaws you can improve. Think about this example; if I were to only tell you all the good things about you would you ever consider improving? Sure if I only pointed out your shortcomings that would be too nice, so here’s where comedy plays an important part as it offers the ideal environment for critique.
Furthermore, I think that “sensitive” people, that can’t take a joke, shouldn’t go to comedy since they cannot look pass the satire as they lack the mental fortitude. But if one is mentally more mature and can see humor for what it is, I think they shouldn’t take advantage of their lesser brethren, offending in this case is not justified. Let’s take this example: I know a friend of mine hates a certain time of humor and even if you explain it to him/her that it isn’t a direct offense towards them, they still take it personal. Wouldn’t it make you the better kin if you didn’t exploit their weakness, but at the same time didn’t encourage it?
In a nutshell, yes comedy has its place and its time but like all things equilibrium is need for a healthy society and a centrist individual. I believe that once people realize this the world will be a better place.
