2) Complete the text with the correct present tense forms of the verbs. Sometimes more than one tense is possible.

We use the simple present:

  • to talk about things that are always true;
  • to talk about habits, in that case, it is common to use adverbs of frequency like always, never, usually, often, that demonstrate the frequency of the activity;
  • for schedule plans, like the departure or arrival of a train.

We use the present perfect:

  • for an action which happened at an unstated time in the past;
  • with stative verbs, such as have, like, know, to talk about a state which started in the past and continues up to present;
  • for experiences.

It's 2 am and I am lying (lie) in my bed. I try (try) to get to sleep but I can't. I have had (have) trouble sleeping for about a month now. I have tried (try) different things to help me sleep, but nothing has worked (work). My mind doesn't want (not want) to stop. A lot is happening (happen) in my life right now. It's exam time, so I study (study) a lot. There's also the question of next year. I have thought (think) about it for ages. Mum and dad wants (want) me to go to university, but I'm just not sure what to do.
