In 1928, on an ugly September day, the Scottish bacteriologist Alexander Fleming was in his laboratory at London's Sainz Mary's Hospital. Fleming was working on an experiment in which he tried to find out the secrets of a bacterium so that he could find the right cure for the diseases that plagued many souls. There are several glass containers on his desk on which the analyzed bacteria grew. In one of the containers he noticed a bluish-green mold that attacked the bacteria, almost dissolving them. The bacteriologist was not alone in his laboratory, so he informed the visitor that he had a premonition that something important would happen to mankind. He resumed his research the next day, and the mysterious mold studied him under a microscope and noticed that it was covered in green spots. It was called Penicillium notatum, and Fleming christened it even more simply penicillin.
