All animals that arrived from the emergency clinic overnight or were brought in first are examined first. If a pet needs surgery or hospitalization, they are admitted. The ED usually requests to discuss all cases referred from the ED. This is followed by morning rounds - all patients currently in the clinic are examined and owners phoned with progress reports. At the same time, animals admitted for surgery are examined and the procedure discussed with the owner. After being admitted, the technicians (or doctor, in some cases) draw blood samples for pre-anesthetic blood work. Then it's time for appointments or surgery. Personally, I like to have surgery as early as possible. This allows the patient to recover during the day while plenty of staff are around to monitor progress. Appointments range from new puppy or cat visits, vaccinations, sick animals, lump and swelling checks, suture removal and the like. Sometimes there is a euthanasia meeting. The most common surgical interventions are spaces, neuters, tumor removals, dental cleanings and tooth extractions in the practices where I have worked. Lunch ... maybe Most clinics no longer take appointments for an hour or two during lunch hours. With more than one vet, meetings continue and still allow each vet to take a lunch break. Lunch is the time to finish surgery, return to phone calls, check that animals are recovering from anesthesia, check on hospitalized patients, occasionally see an emergency appointment, and hopefully… eat lunch .
