The Romanian folk costume as well as the entire folk art (architecture, wood carvings, ceramics, etc.) was born and has lived in our country since ancient times. History tells us that the Dacians were dressed in the same way as our mountain peasants: "Their clothing was a kind of tunic up to the knee, tied with a belt over the middle, wide anklets tied at the ankle with strings or tied in sackcloths, on top of which was a wide, sleeveless cloak wrapped around the shoulder.
When describing the evolution of the Romanian folk costume, it was taken into account that throughout history, between Moldova and Transylvania, multiple links were established and developed: economic, political and cultural, which were interwoven in various ways. At the level of economy and traditional peasant life, these links had a permanent character, manifesting themselves on different levels. In this respect, we would like to underline the Romanian costume, which is part of the typology of the women's costume with fota, called "catrinta" here as in Moldova, and the men's costume with cropped crows and the suman with folds.
