I have seen both good and bad film adaptations of book.
I believe that what makes a good book-movie adaptation is the way the plot is perceived by the director and the cast. For example, the book may be told in first person by the main character. You cannot completely tell a movie plot from only the main character's perspective. I mostly prefer when things that are going to happen later in the movie are foresaw in some of the character's actions, especially when those things weren't shown in the book. It just furthers the information we are getting, as long as it does not change the plot too much.
As of bad movie adaptations that i have seen, i could name a few, like the 'Percy Jackson' movies, based on the book series with the same name, or 'Vampire Academy'. In both cases, i felt like the whole plot and point of the book had been altered, for some reason i cannot grasp. Good movie adaptations that i've seen are 'The Book Thief' 'Miss Peregrine', 'Me before you' and many others.
Usually, critics tent do be horrifyingly detached from the whole idea of the book/movie, so my opinions tend to be almost always partially different from theirs, but this may only be because i am emotionally invested in the stories and they probably couldn't care less about it
