It's that time of year again where we reflect on the past twelve months and set our sights on the year ahead. We make promises to ourselves that we'll be better, do better and be happier. We'll lose weight, save money, learn a new skill and spend more time with family and friends. But all too often, these well-intentioned resolutions fall by the wayside and we're back to our old ways come February.
Why is it so hard to keep our New Year's resolutions? One reason is that we often set unrealistic goals that are impossible to achieve. We're too hard on ourselves and expect perfection. If we slip up, we feel like we've failed and give up altogether.
Another reason is that we don't have a solid plan in place to help us achieve our goals. We may know what we want to do, but we don't have a step-by-step guide to get us there. Without a roadmap, it's easy to get sidetracked or discouraged.
Finally, we may not be truly committed to change. We may want to improve our lives, but we're not willing to put in the hard work required to make lasting changes. We may also lack the motivation to stick with it when things get tough.
If you're struggling to keep your New Year's resolutions, don't give up. Start by setting realistic goals and make a plan to help you achieve them. And most importantly, be patient with yourself and be prepared to put in the hard work required for lasting change.
