Today, Madrid is a modern city with 3 million inhabitants. Here is the residence of the Spanish royal family, as well as the headquarters of the government, the parliament and the public administration. Entering Madrid, through suburban buildings, is not a good one, but the streets in the center create a pleasant surprise.
There are a myriad of medieval buildings, narrow streets dotted with statues and bistros that give rise to large squares built in the eighteenth century. Compared to Spain's historic cities like Toledo, Salamanca, Sevilla, Granada, Madrid is less spectacular, but the monarchs have managed to form over time an impressive collection of art that forms the basis of the Prado Museum and the main tourist attraction. The paintings have provided Madrid with a privileged place in the European cultural circuit.
