"To be able to" nu este verb modal, deoarece este format din "to be" + adjectiv + verb la infinitiv, dar poate înlocui cu succes "can" sau "could" pentru a exprima posibilitatea, capacitatea de a realiza ceva.
- "can"
(a) exprimă posibilitatea sau abilitatea de a realiza un anumit lucru, la o formă de prezent: He can swim, but he can't ride a bike. (El poate înota, dar nu poate merge pe bicicletă.)
(b) exprimă o solicitare informală (limbaj amical, apropiat): Can you pass me the salt, please? (Poţi să-mi dai sarea, te rog?)
- "could"
(a) exprimă posibilitatea sau abilitatea de a realiza un anumit lucru, la o formă de trecut a verbului: He could swim, but he couldn't ride a bike. (El putea înota, dar nu putea merge pe bicicletă.)
(b) exprimă o solicitare formală (politicoasă): Could you pass me the salt, please? (Ai putea să-mi dai sarea, te rog?)
