Imi scoate ti si mie verbele va roggggg si sa imi spune ti la ce timp sunt va rogggggg The new speakers of English We're beginning to do things the English way. We even went to Spain on holiday this year!' Natalie
Napier talks to a brother and sister who have made the most of their new country. Four years after she and her family arrived in Britain from Poland with only some English, eighteen-year-old Joasia Kossowska has been accepted by Cambridge University to read law. Her younger brother Piotr, fifteen, has won a scholarship to a public school. He has been visiting museums all summer: his ambition is to become an artist. When the family emigrated to Britain, Joasia and Piotr went to a local school. For the first year they had to have special English classes but within a year they were overtaking their fellow pupils. "When we left Poland l was attending Szkota Podstawowa, that's sort of like secondary school in Britain. I had done Russian for three years but didn't know very much English," says Joasia. When we started the English lessons l studied the same way I had studied Russian. You know, grammar exercises, lists of word. But I also had to talk, talk, talk from the start. needed to make friends!
