Stefan cel Mare lived between 1457-1504. He had a very long reign and was a skilled steward and loved learning.
Stefan cel Mare was a great ruler of Moldova and he knew how to defend his country bravely. For this reason he is the protagonist in many poems, stories and legends.
In the first years of his reign, Stefan was on good terms with Poland and the Ottoman Empire. The only neighboring country with which he had a war was Hungary, after relations improved, Stefan refused to pay tribute to the Ottomans.
The following year the sultan wanted to conquer Moldova, but was forced to withdraw with heavy losses.
He was known as a good Christian and from the fact that after each war, he built a monastery for all the souls lost in battle.
Finally Stephen the Great died in 1504 and was buried at Putna Monastery, Romania.
