In the middle of the 5th century,in the country we now call Britain, there lived a Celtic king named Arthur. However,Arthurian legends developed much later,in the 12th and 13th centuries. They told tales not only about King Arthur but also about the Knights of the Round Table and their chivalry, which combined virtues of loyalty and generosity with courtly love for women. This is one of the legends. It was Christmas. The barons and knights were gathered together in London's greatest church. In the churchyard, they saw a mighty sword, sticking out of a huge block of marble. On the stone were the words:‘Whoever pulls this sword from the stone is the rightful king of England.’ All the barons and knights throught they should be king and were eager to try their strengh. So,it was announced that on New Year's Day a tournament would be held.People came from all over the country to take part in the tournament.Among them were a north-country knight,Sir Ector, and his sons, proud Sir Kay and his young brother,Arthur. As he had left his sword at home,Sir Kay asked his younger brother,Arthur,to go and fetch it.When Arthur saw a sword sticking out of the stone in the churchyard,he decided to borrow it.He quickly pulled out the sword and took it to his brother. As soon as Sir Kay saw the sword,he went to Sir Ector saying ‘Father.Look!I have pulled the sword from the stone.I must be the rightful king.’But Sir Ector soon discovered the truth. He asked Arthur to push the sword back into the stone. Then Sir Ector seized it and pulled with all his strength. The sword resisted him.Sir Kay tried next but still the sword would not move. When Arthur took hold of the sword,it answered to his hand and slid out of the stone like silk.Sir Ector knelt down before him. ‘Father, why are you kneeling?’ asked Arthur.‘I’m not your father,’confessed Sir Ector, ‘through I love like a son.You were brought to my door one stormy night. And now I understand that you must be the son of King Uther and the rightful King of all England.’ And so it was that the boy,Arthur, was acclaimed King of England to be served loyally by the people.
