The White House is the official residence and main place of work of the President of the United States of America. Located at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW in Washington, DC, the main building was built in the Georgian style, between 1792 and 1800, in white painted tiles, being the residence of the chief executive for all presidents starting with John Adams. After Thomas Jefferson moved into the White House in 1801, together with architect Benjamin Henry Latrobe, they made plans to expand the building to create storage facilities. The White House is 222 years old. Construction began with the laying of the foundation stone on October 13, 1792. In a diary kept by the District Commissioner for Construction, he writes that the foundations were even dug by slaves. The foundations were built by slave laborers. Most of the other work was done by immigrants, many still without citizenship. Most of the construction and plastering work was done by Irish and Italian immigrants. The initial construction period was eight years, with an estimated cost of $ 232,371.83 USD ($ 2.4 million USD in 2005). Although still unfinished, the White House was ready for occupation on November 1, 1800. When construction was completed, the sandstone walls were covered with a mixture of lime and glue rice, giving the house a familiar color.
