Greece, known since Anikytos under the name of Hellas, is a country located in Southeastern Europe, Balkan Peninsula. Greece is a member of the North Atlantic Treaty, the European Union and the euro area. Greece is strategically located at the crossroads between Europe, West Asia and Africa and is bordered on the northwest by Albania, Macedonia to the north and northeast Bulgaria and Turkey. It consists of 13 administrative regions called periphery, which in turn are divided into prefectures. Greece has the longest coastline in the Mediterranean and 11th in length, holding a large islands (approximately 1,400, of which 227 are inhabited). Eighty percent of Greek territory consists of mountains, the highest of which is Mount Olympus with 2917 m.
