Chaplin was born on April 16, 1889, in East Street, Walworth, London . His parents were animators; his father was a vocalist and actor, and his mother was a singer and actress. They divorced before Charles turned three. He learned to sing from his parents. The 1891 census shows that his mother, actress Hannah Hill , lived with Charles and his stepbrother, Sydney on Barlow Street, Walworth. As a child, Charlie lived with his mother in many places and addresses, including 3 Pownall Terrace, Chester Street and 39 Methley Street. His maternal grandmother was half a gypsy , of which she was extremely proud.Charlie Chaplin's first American tour was with Fred Karno 's group between 1910 and 1912. After five months in England, he returned to the United States for a second tour, arriving with the band Karno on on October 2, 1912. Arthur Stanley Jefferson, who would later be known as Stan Laurel , was in the same company . They were roommates in a boarding house. Stan returned to England, but Chaplin remained in the United States. In 1913, Chaplin was seen with the band by Mack Sennett , Mabel Normand , Minta Durfee and Fatty Arbuckle . In 1919, Chaplin co-founded the distribution company United Artists with Mary Pickford , Douglas Fairbanks, and DWGriffith , who wanted to get rid of the growing power of distributors in the Hollywood studio system. This move, along with full control of the productions, thanks to his studio, ensured Chaplin's independence as a film producer. He was a member of United Artists until the 1950s.
