Our human mind is set to recall long term information. Lies are not information. Lies are statements that do not show the reality. We usually lie when we did not do/want to do something, or do not do/want to do something. You cannot tell your best friend "I don't want to go with you for shopping"; so, you will lie, and will tell her/him that your mother needs you to help her with some housework.
But you forgot about the lie, and you go out... Your friend is shopping exactly in that neighborhood and sees you...
Lies are not premeditated, we usually "invent" them on spot. "Sorry, I did my homework, but I simply forgot to take my notebook with me!". It happens many time when we say the lie without thinking of it. "You broke my window! I saw you!" The usual reply is: "No! I didn't do it! It was another boy!". Your mother notices that you have some bad results and says "You didn't learn you lessons!" You, candidly, reply: "Oh, Mum, I did! I always do... but my teacher doesn't like me"
However, these lies are something awkward to tell, because it may happen that you can be proved to be a liar. In the first case, the teacher will request that you take out all your books and notebooks from your bag and he/she will see the notebook with the missing homework. In the second case, somebody can come and tell you: "Don't lie, boy, I saw you, too, breaking the window!". In the third case, your mother can meet your teacher and will find out that you did not learn anything for quite a while!
We usually think that telling the truth might hurt someone. It's true... But it doesn't hurt that much! A lie damages the trust we have in somebody or somebody has in us... This way those lies become our enemies.
