Childhood Memories, by Ion Creangă
One of my favourite books is "Childhood Memories", written by the Roumanian writer Ion Creangă. It is a book that describes the life of the main character, Nică (the author himself when he was young), since his birth until he became a teacher.
The book contains four chapters. There are certain episodes that are memorable for me, especially the funniest of them. It is impossible not to laugh when you imagine the children catching and squashing flies with their textbooks, and their being punished for that by the priest of the village.
Another amusing story is when Nică stole cherries from his aunt, Mărioara. He pretends to look for his cousin, Vasile, to invite him to swim in the river Ozana. Taking advantage of the fact that his aunt is not attentive, Nică quickly climbs up in a cherry tree to steal cherries. Mărioara finally sees him and chases him, destroying the whole plot of hemp.
A funny episode is Nică's disobedience when his mother asks him to take care of his younger brother. Being a hot day, the narrator goes to Ozana river for a swim, ignoring his promise of babysitting his brother. Smaranda, his mother, finds him and takes his clothes in secret. Nică must wait until it's dark enough to avoid being seen naked.
There are so many other amusing memories described by Ion Creangă. In the meantime, the book is a picture of the rural life in Moldova of those times.
