He was born in 1940 in the commune of Vişani, Braila County. He won 18 national championship titles in heavyweight during 1961-1978. He was Olympic champion in 1972 (Munich); has been awarded the bronze medal at the 1968 Olympics (Mexico). He won two silver medals at CM (1963-1971); 4 bronze medals at CM (1966-1967-1970-1974). He was a European champion in Essen in 1966 and won two bronze medals at the EC (1972,1973). He was awarded the title of Emeritus Master of Sport
