The Danube Delta, located mostly in Dobrogea, Romania and partly in Ukraine, is the second largest and best preserved of the European deltas. The Danube Delta is limited southwest of the Dobrogea plateau, north of Bessarabia, and in the east it flows into the Black Sea. The flora of the Delta is largely represented by a vegetation specific to wetlands. There are also forests made up of trees, shrubs and climbing plants. At the level of grasses, there are floristic elements, some of which are protected at European level. The Danube Delta contains more than 360 species of birds and 45 species of freshwater fish in its many lakes. This is where millions of birds from different parts of the Earth come to nest. The major fish species in the Danube Delta are pike and catfish. The fauna of the delta is rich and varied in species of mammals, birds, reptiles, amphibians, fish, crustaceans, snails, mollusks and insects; some of which are protected by law.
