 A fost odată un meşter tâmplar, pe nume Geppetto. Şi, într-o zi, priceput cum era, izbuti să facă o păpuşă care semăna cu un băieţel adevărat.
               - O să te numesc Pinocchio, îi spuse el.
               Apoi, Geppetto îi croi nişte haine şi o pălărioară pe măsură. Cum lemnul din care fusese făcută era fermecat, păpuşa se puse pe grăit cu glas omenesc, spre uimirea bătrânului tâmplar. Şi se mai şi apucă să dănţuiască prin toată casa!
               Ca orice părinte grijuliu, Geppetto îl trimise pe Pinocchio la şcoală. Dar, fiind foarte sărac, el se văzu nevoit să-şi vândă paltonul ca să-i poată lua un abecedar. Numai că, în drum spre şcoală, Pinocchio se simţi atras de muzica vioaie ce se auzea dinspre Teatrul de marionete. Aşa că îşi vându abecedarul, ca să-şi poată lua un bilet de intrare la spectacol. Înăuntru, se împrieteni cu mai multe păpuşi de lemn asemenea lui. Iar odată urcat pe scenă, se apucă să facă tot felul de giumbuşlucuri! Dar păpuşarul Mâncă-Foc se mânie cumplit, căci Pinocchio îi stricase frumuseţe de spectacol. Pinocchio îşi ceru iertare şi-i povesti lui Mâncă-Foc despre Geppetto, şi cum ajunsese la teatru şi nu la şcoală. Milos din fire, acesta îi spuse:
               - Uite, ţine de la mine aceşti cinci galbeni şi du-i bunului tău tată, ca să-şi cumpere un palton nou.
               Pe drumul spre casă, păpuşa se întâlni cu Motanul şi Vulpea, doi hoţomani care-i băgară în cap că şi-ar putea înmulţi banii dacă i-ar îngropa la rădăcina unui copac fermecat, din Câmpul Minunilor. Zis şi făcut, doar că, atunci când se trezi din somn, nu mai găsi nici măcar cei cinci galbeni îngropaţi! Strigă deznădăjduit după ajutor şi, pe dată, lângă el se arătă Zâna cu Părul Albăstrui. Dar în loc să recunoască sincer ce prostie făcuse, Pinocchio îi trânti o minciună, spunându-i că pierduse banii pentru Geppetto. Nici nu sfârşi bine, că nasul i se şi lungi de-un cot!
               — Aşa o să păţeşti ori de câte ori vei spune minciuni! îi zise zâna supărată.
               Speriat, Pinocchio îi mărturisi zânei adevărul, iar ea îi drese nasul la loc, chemând în ajutor o ciocănitoare. În vreme ce Pinocchio se îndrepta spre casă, mergând pe ţărmul mării, un val uriaş îl izbi cu putere şi îl duse departe, în larg, unde fu înghiţit de o balenă! Spre bucuria lui însă, în burta acesteia dădu peste tatăl său, Geppetto! Bătrânul fusese şi el înghiţit de balenă, cu tot cu corăbioara cu care plecase în căutarea lui Pinocchio. Pândind momentul în care balena dormea cu gura deschisă, aproape de mal, cei doi izbutiră să iasă din burta ei şi înotară până la ţărm. 
               Ajuns acasă, Pinocchio se cuminţi şi, după ce îşi termina lecţiile, îl ajuta pe Geppetto în atelier. Pentru o aşa bună purtare, într-o noapte îl vizită Zâna cu Părul Albăstrui, care-i împlini cea mai arzătoare dorinţă. Aşa că, a doua zi, Pinocchio cel de lemn se prefăcu într-un băieţel în carne şi oase, spre marea bucurie a lui Geppetto!​

He was once a carpenter named Geppetto. And one day, as good as he was, he managed to make a doll that looked like a real boy.

"I'll call you Pinocchio," he told her.

Then Geppetto tailored some clothes and a hat to match. As the wood from which it had been made was enchanted, the doll began to speak in a human voice, to the astonishment of the old carpenter. And he starts dancing all over the house!

Like any caring parent, Geppetto sent Pinocchio to school. But being very poor, he was forced to sell his coat so that he could get an alphabet. But on the way to school, Pinocchio was drawn to the lively music of the Puppet Theater. So they sell their alphabet so they can get a ticket to the show. Inside, he befriended several wooden dolls like his. And once he got on stage, he started doing all sorts of tricks! But the Fire Eater puppet was terribly angry, for Pinocchio had ruined his show beauty. Pinocchio apologized and told Fire Eater about Geppetto, and how he got to the theater and not to school. Merciful by nature, he said to her:

"Look, take these five yellows from me and take them to your good father to buy him a new coat."

On the way home, the doll met the Cat and the Fox, two thieves who thought that they could multiply their money if they buried them at the root of an enchanted tree in the Field of Wonders. Said and done, only, when he awoke from sleep, he could not even find the five buried yellows! He cried out in despair for help, and at once the Blue-Haired Fairy appeared beside him. But instead of honestly admitting how stupid he had been, Pinocchio lied to him, telling him that he had lost money for Geppetto. It didn't even end well, because his nose was too long!

"That's what you'll do whenever you tell lies!" the fairy told him angrily.

Frightened, Pinocchio told the fairy the truth, and she straightened her nose again, calling for a woodpecker. As Pinocchio headed home, walking along the shore of the sea, a huge wave hit him hard and carried him away to the open sea, where he was swallowed by a whale! To his delight, however, in his belly he came across his father, Geppetto! The old man had also been swallowed by the whale, along with the ship with which he had gone in search of Pinocchio. Watching the whale sleep with its mouth open near the shore, the two managed to get out of her belly and swim to shore.

When he got home, Pinocchio calmed down and, after finishing his lessons, helped Geppetto in the workshop. For such good behavior, one night he was visited by the Blue-haired Fairy, who fulfilled his most ardent wish. So, the next day, the wooden Pinocchio turned into a little boy in the flesh, to Geppetto's great joy!
