The story: Pocahontas
In the 1600s a group of English people settled in Jamestown, North America. They ventured to the New World in the hope of finding pearls, silver, or gold. They were too busy dreaming of gold to think of growing food. The colonists began to die. Some died of hunger, some of disease, and other in Indian attacks. Captain John Smith, an energetic 27-year-old soldier, organized the colonists, forcing zhem to work the land. The work wasn't easy because they had to clear thick forests. When they had run out of food, Smith set off into the forests to get corn from the Indians in exchange for guns and cannons. Powhatan, one of the Indian chiefs, took him prisoner.
Poor Smith had to watch as all his men were killed. After a short while he was shown to the Indian chief to whom he gave a round ivory double compass. When he used this to demonstrate the sky, the Sun, Moon, the stars and the roundness of the Earth, they all stood amazed. Within an hour of having tied him to a tree, the chief, with the compass in his hand, told Smith of his intention to set him free. Triumphantly, a guard led Smith to a feast. The food which was brought to him would have fed thirty men. The next morning they brought him even more food. This mafde Smith think they were going to fatten him up to eat him not to free him!
Again they brought Smith before their chief. Powhatan sat on a high wooden seat by the fire. More than two hundred fierce-looking Indians stood staring at him, as if he were a monster. A young girl, Pocahontas, sat opposite the chief. On either side of her there were two rows of men, an behind them, their women with heads and shoulders painted red. A long consultation soon started. Unfortunately, the Indians did not find in Smith's favour.
Two great stones were dragged to the middle of the group. Then as many Indians as possible laid their hands on Smith, and pulled him to the sacrifical stone where they placed his head. Just as they were ready to beat his brain out with their clubs, Pocahontas, the king's dearest gaughter , ran forward, took his head in her arms and laid her own upon his to save him from death. She believed people could live together even if they were from different cultures.
The legend tell us how Pocahontas played an important part in the lives of the colonists. She helped them to survive. As long as she lived, peace was kept between her people and the English. The story of Captain Smith and Princess Pocahontas lies somewhere between myth and legend because it tells of universal problem - forbidden love between members of enemy families. The legendary love of Pocahontas and Captain Smith was turned into a film. 'Pocahontas' was a great cinema hit in the late 1990s.
Thank you in anticipation! :3
