Canterbury Cathedral became a popular place of pilgrimage because of Saint Thomas Beckets' tomb. People all over the world, both famous and unknown want to visit it in hope that a miracle will cure their illness. When he used to be the Archbishop of Canterbury, during the reign of King Henry the IInd, he actually became very loved by the people until he was brutally murdered right on the steps of the altar. It happened because when he was named Archbishop by his friend the king, he completely changed his way of life from luxurious to modest. Before he had this title he was the king's best friend and adviser but as soon as he received it, everything changed. He became interested in defending the rights of the Church and separate this institution from the Crown, while King Henry II hoped to control it with his help. Because he became very popular, this upset the king so much that he carelessly said he wanted to be rid of this man, words which were misinterpreted by five of his knights who committed the crime. This way, because he was very loved, Thomas Becket's tomb became a place of mourning even for the king who was devastated after finding out what his words led to.
