Main characters: The poor children in England: the little chimney-sweeps, the children working in factories and mines, the working animals (donkeys) and their owners, the poor merchants, the thieves; most importantly the good Earl  Shaftesbury and his friends.

Main good deeds: Lord Ashley helped pass a law to forbid children's work as chimney sweepers; another law was passed, initiated by him and his friends that was limiting children's work in factories and mines.

Manny London donkeys were saved from abuse and the Earl would lend his personal cart to poor people.

Thieves who wanted to mend their ways and live a better, proper, life, were sent on his expense overseas .

• The good Earl tried hard to change their lives, too. Finally, with his friends, he succeeded in putting this right as well. Parliament passed a law that no little boys or girls were to work in a factory or down a mine.
• Bunul Lord a încercat mult să schimbe și viețile lor. În cele din urmă cu ajutorul prietenilor lui, a reușit să îndrepte și aici lucrurile. Parlamentul a trecut o lege ca nici-un băiețel sau fetiță să mai poată lucra în fabrică sau jos, în mine.

• He did not like to see the way some people ill-treated donkeys pulling carts and barrows through the streets of London. So he said that he would give prizes for the best-kept donkeys. It was not long before London donkeys were the best in the land.
• Nu-i plăcea să vadă felul în care unii își maltratau măgarii trăgând căruțe și cărucioare pe străzile Londrei. Așa că a anunțat că va da un premiu pentru cei mai bine întreținuți măgari. Nu mult a trecut și măgarii din Londra au devenit cei mai buni din țară.

• If a man was too poor to buy a barrow to carry his goods to the market, the Earl would lend him his. He was sure to have a good sale, as many people were very anxious to buy apples and potatoes from the Earl's barrow.
• Dacă un om era prea sărac ca să-și cumpere o căruță sau roabă cu care să-și ducă mărfurile la piață, Lord Shaftesbury îi împrumuta căruciorul lui. Omul putea fi acum sigur de a avea o bună vânzare, cum multă lume voia să cumpere mere și cartofi de la căruța lordului.

• The Earl spoke to them, and told them he could help them to be honest men. Some were very glad to have the chance, and the Earl sent them across the seas. There, in a new country, they were able to start a better and useful life.
