Read the three mysteries. Think about what might have happened and write down your explanations. Read each mystery to Student A and tell them what you think might have happened. Ask for Student A’s ideas, too. Then student A will tell you what really happened. I think he might have ... He must have ... He can’t have ... 1 A man was lying in a field. He was dead. Next to him there was an unopened package. There was no one else in the field, and no animals. What happened? How did he die? 2 In the middle of the ocean there was a yacht. Around the yacht there were five dead bodies in the water. They were wearing their swim suits. They were not injured. What happened? How did they die? 3 The police were looking for a murderer. They knew he was in a certain house at a certain time. They didn’t know what he looked like but they knew his name was John and that he was inside the house. The police ran into the house. Inside the house was a doctor, a dentist, and a fireman. The police immediately arrested the fireman. Why? How did they know that he was the murderer?

Mystery 1:
- I think he might have been poisoned by the package, or the package might have contained a deadly weapon that killed him. He must have been targeted by someone, and he can't have died of natural causes, since there were no other people nor animals around.
- I think he might have been poisoned by the contents of the package. He must have opened it, and the poison killed him. He can't have been killed by anyone else, since there was no one else in the field.
Mystery 2:
- I think they might have been poisoned by something in the water, or they could have been poisoned by something on the yacht. He must have been targeted by someone, and they can't have died of natural causes, since there were no injuries.
- I think they might have been poisoned. He must have been given food or drink that was laced with a toxin, which caused them to die quickly. They can't have been killed by another person, as there was no one else around the yacht.
Mystery 3:
- I think the fireman might have been wearing a disguise and the police knew the murderer's name was John. He must have been the only one in the house who was wearing a disguise, and he can't have been the doctor or the dentist.
- The police must have known that the fireman was the murderer because they knew his name was John. He can't have been innocent because the police knew he was in the house at the time of the murder. They might have also been able to identify him through surveillance footage or by matching his description to the other people in the house.
