Before he died Edward asked his brother Richard to take care of his oldest son Edward until he became king . However , Richard wanted to be king himself . Edward , who was only 12 , was travelling to London with his uncle and half - brother when they met Richard on the road . He had Edward's uncle and half - brother arrested and put in prison . Then Richard took Edward to London . Edward's mother was so terrified that she took her other children to Westminster Abbey where they would be safe . She knew that Richard would do anything to become king . Richard took the boy to the Tower of London , where he would stay until the coronation ( when he would be made king ) . The date of the ceremony was postponed from 4th May to 25th June , Meanwhile , Edward's younger brother Richard was sent to live with him . They were seen playing near the Tower . However , while they were there , the government of the time decided neither of them could be king as their parents hadn't been married . As a result , their uncle became King Richard . Then the princes disappeared . Two hundred years later , workmen found two skeletons in a wooden box in the Tower . King Charles II had these bones buried in Westminster Cathedral . Since the discovery of DNA technology , historians have asked for permission to do experiments on the bones , but so far nobody has been allowed to test them . Even if they did , we will never know who killed them . The princes ' story has been written about in many books , including a Shakespeare play , and the boys are also the subject of many paintings . It seems so awful that two young children could be murdered while their uncle got away with the crime . But without the scientific facts , we just do not know what happened to them .
