The modern Medgidia was built by the Ottoman administration as a planned city to accomodate refugees from the Crimean War. It became a municipality in 1994 and the current mayor is Valentin Vrabie, an independent. Medgidia is located 39 kilometres away from Constanta, between the Danube and the Black Sea.
It has a rich agricultural tradition and offers better climate conditions than the other cities of Romania because the winter is shorter there. Beside the agricultural activities, the main industry deals in cement and building materials.
Because Medgidia lies in the center of an agricultural area, with a fertile soil and provided with irigation systems, it offers an outsanding irrigation potential.
There are currently 4 high schools, 8 primary schools and 4 cultural centers with a hall for cultural activities.
The estimated population is 36.008 and the total area of the city is 90.17 km²
