LEGEND-STEPHEN III

Stephen III (b. 1438-1439, Borzești - d. July 2, 1504, Suceava), nicknamed Stephen the Great or, after his canonization by the Romanian Orthodox Church, Stephen the Great and Saint, was lord of Moldavia between the years 1457 and 1504. He was the son of Bogdan II, ruling for 47 years, the longest reign of the medieval era in the Romanian Lands.

Stephen the Great is considered a prominent figure in the history of Romania, endowed with great qualities as a statesman, diplomat and military leader. These qualities allowed him to overcome well the moments of major crisis, generated either by the military interventions of the neighboring states or by attempts, from inside or supported from outside the country, to remove him from the reign. During his reign, Moldova reached the peak of its state development, experiencing a long period of internal stability, economic prosperity and social peace.

Internally, he based his regime on a new ruling class consisting of people mostly from the lower nobility, elevated to dignity based on military merit, loyalty to the lord or close kinship with him. He also greatly supported the development of racism through collective ownership of rice communities, especially in wars and battles, which ensured the loyalty of this class, social peace in the country and human strength to have a mass army - "the army the big one ”.

During his reign he fought over 40 wars or battles, the vast majority victorious, the most significant being the victory of Baia over Matei Corvin in 1467, the victory of Lipnic against the Tartars in 1469 or the victory in the Battle of Codrii Cosminului on the King of Poland Ioan Albert, in 1497. The greatest military success was the crushing victory of the Battle of Vaslui against a powerful Ottoman army led by Soliman-Pasha - beilerbeiul Rumelia, on January 10, 1475. Following the loss of this battle, In next, Sultan Mehmed II will lead in person an expedition to Moldova concluded with the defeat of the Moldovan army, in the battle of Valea Albă-Războieni.

After 1476, Stephen was forced to accept the suzerainty of the Ottoman Empire, obtaining very good conditions for Moldavia. In exchange for a small annual tribute, the country kept its institutions and internal political autonomy intact.

Stephen the Great was a great supporter of culture and the church, founding a large number of monasteries and churches both in Moldova and in Wallachia, Transylvania or Mount Athos. For these merits he was canonized by the Romanian Orthodox Church, with the name of Stephen the Great and Saint, on June 20, 1992.

He was married three times to Evdochia - the daughter of the great prince of Kiev, Maria of Mangop - of the Byzantine imperial family and Maria Voichița - the daughter of Radu the Beautiful, the marriages in which seven children were born. Starting with 1497, he associated his son Bogdan III, who will succeed him to the throne. He died on July 2, 1504, being buried at the Putna Monastery.
