One Sunday afternoon last winter, during December, I decided to go with a friend of mine, Michael for a bike ride. We were heading to the park. It was very cold and the wind was blowing hard making it almost impossible to breath. We were cycling along a country lane when we saw some children playing on a frozen pond. There were two boys who were about 12 years old and one little girl who was around the age of 6. The little girl and one of the boys seemed worried because the other boy, whose name I found out later, was jumping on the ice laughing and saying that no matter how hard he’ll jump, the ice won’t break.

Suddenly we heard a shout. To our horror one of the boys, Jake, as I heard the other were calling him, the same boy who was jumping, had fallen through the ice. I didn’t know what happened but I was sure that he jumped too hard and the ice broke causing him to fall. We immediately rushed over to help but it was too dangerous to walk across the ice. The boy was shouting, crying for help while trying to get out of the cold water. My friend and I ran to borrow a ladder. We ran to the first house we saw and we were lucky enough to find a ladder resting on the exterior wall of the house. We took the ladder and then we hurried back to the pond. I put the ladder on the ice and crawled slowly and carefully across it towards the boy. Jake was barely moving now. He was so frightened and cold that he wasn’t able to speak anymore. I caught hold of his hand and finally managed to pull him out of the icy water. Luckily the boy wasn’t hurt, just very frightened.

His parents turned up about ten minutes later. When they saw him frightened, with his face pale and with his clothes full of water they were shocked and very angry with him! I felt a bit sorry for the boy. He had certainly learned a lesson – the hard way!
