For 28 years, Berlin was divided by a wall that separated East and West Germany. In 1989, political protests in Eastern Europe led to the East German government announcing that citizens could visit the western side of the city. On November 9th, thousands of East Berliners rushed to the wall and asked the guards to open the gates. They were allowed to pass and greeted with flowers and champagne by West Berliners. People climbed and danced on the wall and soon the government sent in bulldozers to demolish it. The wall was gone and 339 days later, East and West Germany united.
