De-a lungul secolului al XVI-lea si la inceputul secolului al XVII-lea,odata cu dezvoltarea schimburilor comerciale, calculele economice devenisera extrem de dificile.De asemenea, dezvoltarea navigatiei a facut necesara corectarea tabelelor astronomice folosite in orientare.Matematicieni cautau modalitati noi de a simplica toate aceste calcule.O idee importanta care s-a conturat in efortul de gasire a unor solutii simplificatoare a fost inlocuirea inmultirilor prin adunari pe baza unor tabele de corespodenta.
Meritul principal revine maetmaticianului scotian John Neper (1550-1617) ,care a stabilit prima tabla de logaritmi zecimali.El facut aceasta pornind de la considerente de natura cinematica si observand legatura dintre termenii unei progresii geometrice si cei ai unei progresii aritmetice.Tabla a fost ulterior imbunatatita de Anglais Briggs(1561-1631) si Wright (1560-1645) si completata intre 1603 si 1611 cu tabele de "antilogaritmi" (astazi -exponentiale) calculate de Suise Burgi.
Introducerea acestor tehnici de calcul a avut ca efect dezvoltarea unor studii teoretice privitoare la functia logaritma si apoi la cea exponentiala, care au depasit cu mult cadrul domeniilor concrete de la care se pornise initial.Astazi ,desi tehnica de calcul cu logaritmi nu se mai aplica ,functiile logarmitice si exponentiale au un rol important in matematica, precum si in fizica, geografie, economie,biologie .

Throughout the sixteenth century and early seventeenth century; once with development of trade, economic calculations had become extremely difficult .Also, development of navigation has made necessary correction  of astronomical tables used in  guidance .Mathematicians were looking new ways to  simplify all these calculations.An important idea that  emerged in the effort  of finding simplifying solutions was replacement of  multiplications by addition   based on correlations tables.The  main merit belongs Scottish mathematician  John NApier (1550-1617) who established  the first board decimal logarithms .He did this from reasons of kinematic nature and   noting the connection between of a geometrical progression and those of an arithmetic progression.The board was further improved by Anglais Bringgs (1561-1631) and Wright(1560-1645) and completed between 1603-1611 with boards of "antilogarithm"(today- exponential) calculated by Suise Burgi. The introduction of these computing  techniques had resulted in  the development  of theoretical studies related to the logarithmic function  and the exponential which far exceeded the specific areas in which it had started initial.Today, although the  logarithm computing doesn't apply and exponantial functions logarithmic,   have an important role in Mathematics ,in Physics; Geography Economics; Biology.
