When it comes to schools, uniforms are usually appreciated. first, discipline is encouraged. The same clothing for all promotes a more serious environment, in which learning comes first. The student is no longer distracted by t-shirts with funny messages or short skirts and can focus on the lesson in class.
Secondly, uniformity also reduces aggression in schools. Children are no longer marginalized because they do not have branded clothes or are criticized and ridiculed for their tastes. Thus, the economic and social barriers between students are reduced (or even eliminated).
From the parents' point of view, the uniforms may be less clothes to buy. Especially in the case of siblings: younger siblings receive older siblings' uniforms.
And regarding the school institution, the uniforms also have the role of identifying the intruders. Also, the connections between the students are closer to a feeling of pride towards their school.
Disadvantages of uniforms
As in any debate, there must be an opposition party. Imposing uniforms in schools is still a delicate matter. How far does the child's freedom of expression go? Am I violating her if I don't let her dress the way she wants?
Schools should be a place where diversity is accepted. Therefore, it is important for students to be able to express themselves even through clothes. in addition, the uniforms suffocate the child's individuality.
Even if we force them to wear the same clothes, the little ones will still find a way to express themselves. In extreme cases, students may resort to things such as brightly dyed hair, tattoos or piercings.
Another factor is that a child in uniform may be the target of out-of-school abusers. Students wearing regular clothing may be taken by the child wearing the uniform.
Last but not least, uniforms mean extra money. Above, I said I can be a financial aid. That is a point of view. But, even if it could be an investment in time, uniforms are another concern for parents, in addition to supplies, textbooks and a backpack.
Dress code
So far we have only talked about ordinary and uniform clothes. It's time to introduce you to the third alternative (of the two existing ones): the dress code.
The dress code is much less restrictive than uniforms. The idea is that the student can dress in what he wants, but to respect certain limits imposed by the school, limits based on human decency. Examples of clothes that would be not allowed in school: mini skirts, T-shirts that are too short or too tight, T-shirts that show alcohol and drugs, intolerant messages on clothes, etc.
Therefore, the dress code can vary from one school to another, depending on the points that are emphasized - decency, tolerance, certain patterns.
In Romania
In our country, according to a survey conducted in January, over 70% of teachers believe that students should wear uniforms in both primary and secondary and high school.
8% of the interviewed teachers declared themselves against the uniforms. At the same time, 5% of the survey participants said that the uniforms should be worn only in the primary cycle, and 13%, only in the primary and secondary cycles.
The survey was conducted on January 15-18 on a national sample of 820 teachers in pre-university education from all three levels: primary, secondary and high school. The research was carried out within a project carried out by the National School of Political and Administrative Studies.
