The main difference is that this story takes place in a modern world whereas the classic Cinderella story is set in a time where princesses were real. Another difference is that the eldest daughter ran a beauty parlour, while in the classic version the two sisters were not working. This alternative Cinderella is doing a correspondence course in accounting and marketing, something that wouldn't be possible in the first tale. In this new story news of the ball is spread by using the newspapers while in the classic Cinderella, information was passed from person to person. Here, the new Cinderella is a different type of person. She has no intention of going to the ball, while in the first story she was really eager to go but couldn't. The Cinderella from our century is looking for a way to gain money so that she can start her own business while classic Cinderella didn't have the opportunity or freedom to do so. In Maeve Birchy's version, The Fairy Godmother holds no magic powers, only a prize to the competition that alternative Cinderella won and had entered because she saw it as an opportunity to earn money. The dress and carriage is replaced by a charm course along with the opportunity to be photographed for a women's magazine and a ride in a Rolls Royce. Upon arriving to the castle, this new king has financial problems, something that doesn't happen in the fairytale world and this new Cinderella is giving him advice on how to fix it. At the party, she is invited to the dance by a drunk prince whereas in the classic story this scene is idyllic. Her behaviour is not at all princess-like: she kicks off her slippers and then when she returns home she has to hitchhike because the driver was off duty. Unlike her inspiration, alternative Cinderella does not want to marry the price but helps him give up drinking and involves him in social work while getting a job as a financial adviser at the company owned by the king.
