A lighthouse keeper, Thomas, rescues Atlanna, the princess of the underwater nation of Atlantis. They fall in love and have a son named Arthur. Atlanna is forced to abandon her family and return to Atlantis and we find that she is executed for having a half-breed son.
In our days, Arthur's younger brother, Orm, the future monarch of Atlantis, declares war on the surface world. Mera, a beautiful princess, goes to the surface and asks Arthur for help, and she gains hist trust by saving his father from a tsunami.
Arthur, reluctantly, goes with Mera, but he is chained and has to duel Orm. Orm nearly kills him, but he is saved by Mera. They go to Sahara and eventually in Sicily to find a magic trident- all along, Mera encourages Arthur to embrace his destiny as a hero.
They fight the monsters and unexpectedly are reunited with Atlanna. Arthur reclaims the trident, which gives him control over seven seas. In a huge fight, he defeats Orm, but chooses to spare his life. Atlanna returns to the surface to reunite with the Thomas, and Arthur ascends to the throne with Mera by his side.
