Halloween is celebrated at October 31. People would dress up in costumes inspired by folklore. This holiday is at least 2000 years old. It was invented and/or ruled by the Celts, what is nowadays Britain, Ireland and Northern France.
This holiday was originally named Samhain (Sow-en). In the past, winter was associated with literal darkness and human death. November 1st was the end or the year. It marked the end of harvest and the beginning or the cold, long winter. The herds were brought in and people came together. The living and the dead. On this night spirits could easily cross over between the realm of living in the dead. Some spirits helped Priests or Druids to perform divination about the upcoming season. Others, however, were troublesome and must be guarded against. The people held grand parties in which whole clans participated. Large bonfires were built and those animals that were weak and not likely to make it through the winter were slaughtered and sacrificed and feast upon. People danced and wore costumes, usually consisting of animal heads and skin, and told stories to each others' fortunes.
Nowadays it’s most likely to be a children’s holiday. Dressing up and trick-or-treating became a traditional activity. Some children, and maybe even grownups, made their own costumes and went out with them. Craving pumpkins became a tradition as well. It became a very big tradition in Ireland to put demonic faces on them. They usually represent protection against negative spirits. But there are many more traditions like lighting bonfires, apple bobbing, divination games, playing pranks, visiting haunted attractions, telling scary stories, as well as watching horror films.
Some people might love or might not like Halloween that much, might be because of religious beliefs. But it really is a fun holiday and at least you can stay up late as you eat the candy you collected! This Halloween, in 2020, will be a very special one as well! The Blue Moon is coming out, so be prepared, spirits can more easily cross to our realm!
