Steve turned his back on them and walked slowly into the house. His friends' laughter was fading away only to be replaced by the sound of old wooden planks creaking beneath his feet. They didn't expect him to agree to go into the abandoned house. He didn't want to, but he had no choice. Had he refused to go in, they would have called him a coward for months. It didn't matter now. He was walking slowly, listening to every little sound and carefully opening every door. "-It's empty", he said. "Of course it is! There's nothing to be afraid of." He reached the staircase and went up. He only had to go to the top floor, open one of the windows and show his friends he got up there, then he could get out of this house and never come back. He had two floors to go. He carefully entered one of the many rooms. It was a private library. Huge bookcases stretched up towards the ceiling and a chandelier was precariously hanging over an old oak table. There were no books to be seen, though. Just dust and spider webs. He listened carefully. He could hear something, but he wasn't sure what it was. "-It's probably my friends, messing around. It's better if I just get this over with. There's nothing here anyway." He went up two flights, and was now up in the attic. There were no windows so he had to go to a different room. He opened the door to his right. The floor on the other side of the room was black. "Hello? Is anybody here?" A pitch black, cawing thing flew towards him. He screamed. Then he realised it was just a crow and started laughing. He could hear his friends panicking outside.
