The long hiccup

It all started with an Indian curry, but it ended in hospital.
For many people the subject of hiccups is a joke, but for Harry Mendis, a fifteen-year-old schoolboy from Birmingham, it was something quite different.
His hiccups began one Sunday lunchtime and continued day and night for two weeks. After the first week, Harry was desperate and his parents took him to hospital, but it took another week for the doctors to cure his attack.
Harry, who is now back at school, described what happened to him.
“I began to hiccup after eating a curry from my local takeaway. I drank a glass of water but that didn’t do any good. That evening I had hiccups every four seconds. We tried everything to stop them. I held my breath and cold drinks. My father even tried to give me a shock but it didn’t work either.”
After a week of sleepless nights, he went to hospital. The doctors took an X-ray of his chest but they couldn’t find anything wrong.
“They gave me some tablets and my hiccups slowed down, but it was another week before the tablets worked completely and my hiccups stopped.”
Harry was very lucky. The world record holder is the unfortunate American farmer Charles Osborne, who hiccupped constantly for sixty-eight years. He eventually stopped in 1990, but nobody knows why.

Totul a inceput cu un curry indian, dar a sfarsit in spital.
Pentru multi oameni subiectul de sughituri este o gluma, dar pentru Harry Mendis, un baiat de 15 ani din Birmingham, a fost ceva diferit.
Sughițurile lui au inceput intr.o duminica la pranz si au continuat zi si noapte timp de doua saptamani.
Dupa prima saptamana, Harry a fost disperat, iar parintii lui l.au dus la spital, dar a durat inca o saptamana ca doctorii sa ii vindece boala. Harry, care acum este la scoala, povesteste ce i s.a intamplat:
"Am inceput sa sughiț dupa ce am mancat curry.Am baut un pahar de apa, dar asta nu a facut nimic bun. In avea seara am avut sughituri la fiecare patru secunde. Am incercat totul sa le facem sa se opreasca. Mi.am tinut respiratia si bauturi reci. Tatal meu a incercat sa ma sperie, dar nici asta nu a mers.
Dupa o saptamana de nopti nedormite, am mers la spital." Doctorii au facut o ecografie la piept, dar nu au gasit nimic neobisnuit.
"Ei mi.au dat niste pastile si sughiturile mele s.au rarit, dar a fost inca o saptamana inainte pastilele au functionat complet iar sughiturile mele s.au oprit."
Harry a fost foarte norocos. Recordul mondial este tinut, din pacate, de fermierul american Charles Osborne, care a sughitat constant pentru 68 de ani. El s.a oprit in 1990, dar nimeni nu stie de ce.
