Hello! :D

1. The Colossus of Rhodes

The Colossus of Rhodes was a statue of the Greek God, Helios, in the city of Rhodes, on the greek island with the same name. It was built in 280 BC, to celebrate the successful defence of Rhodes city against an attack by Demetrius Poliorcetes, who had besieged it for a year with a large army and navy.

It was about 33 meters tall, which is the height of the Statue of Liberty, feet to crown.

It collapsed during the earthquake of 226 BC, although parts of it were preserved

Fun facts:

The statue stood for a total of 54 years before getting destroyed by a massive earthquake in 226 BC.

o The exterior of the statue was made mainly from metals, iron and bronze and the interior was made from stone that was carved and sculptured.

o Pieces of the statue laid on the ground for around 800 years until they were robbed of its bronze by an Arab force.

o Ptolemy III, the King of Egypt offered to pay for reconstruction of the Colossus of Rhodes but Rhodians refused.

because they believed that Helios himself was angered by the Statue and caused the earthquake that destroyed it.

2. The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus (Tomb of Mausolus)

The Mausoleum at Halicarnassus was a tomb built between 353 and 350 BC in Halicarnassus (now Bodrum, Turkey). The Mausoleum was an enormous white marble tomb, built to house the body of King Mausolus of Caria (southwest modern Turkey) and his sister and wife Artemisia II.

The Mausoleum was approximately 45 m tall, and the four sides were adorned with sculptural reliefs, each created by one of four Greek sculptors: Leochares, Bryaxis, Scopas of Paros, and Timotheus.

The mausoleum was considered to be such an aesthetic triumph that Antipater of Sidon identified it as one of his Seven Wonders of the Ancient World.

It was destroyed by successive earthquakes from the 12th to the 15th century

Fun facts:

o     The word mausoleum has now come to be used generically for an above-ground tomb.

o Its construction was finished around 350 BC and it was built in the center of Halicarnassus, covering a large plot of land.

o Almost 19 centuries after it was completed, the Mausoleum was destroyed by earthquakes in the 1300s.

o Most of what remained of the Mausoleum following the earthquake was taken apart and reused as building materials to reconstruct Bodrum castle by the Knights Hospitaller of St John in the 1500s.

o The House of the Temple in Washington DC was built to resemble how we think the Mausoleum of Halicarnassus would have looked.

o Decorative marble stonework from the Mausoleum can be found today in the British Museum, London, England.

o It is also believed that the Mausoleum at Halicarnassus inspired the tomb of Alexander the Great and the Belevei Mausoleum.

Succes la scoala!
